Describe a time or moment when you experienced something close to what Emerson is describing in his essay "Nature". Cite specific quotes from his essay to illustrate how/why it was similar.
"Nature never wears a mean appearance." I can relate to this quote from Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson because sometimes when a lot is going on in my life & I can't handle being surrounded by a million things going on at once, I sometimes decide to just go outside at night & walk around my neighborhood or just sit in my front yard. Nature, the stars, the low light, and just the pure quietness really makes me think about life and it calms me down if I'm about to go crazy. Nature never wears a mean appearance, to me, it sort of wears a more calm & deep appearance. It's sort of like an inanimate object/friend that I can go to when I'm in need.
I like to go camping a lot because I am away from all my problems. It is a peaceful, yet fun experience. When I go camping I am not worried about texting people or going on Facebook. I like to be out at the beach or just relaxing with friends and family. It is almost always calm and quiet when we go camping. We don't here cars always driving by or hearing the TV playing. "But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars." At night I like to just sit on the beach and listen to the sound of the waves crashing and look at the stars. It is a perfect way to end your day. A great way I like to start off my day is by waking up early so I can go watch the sunrise. I try to do that every time I go camping.
I think many of us like to be left alone and be by ourselves when a lot is going on. It's a time to think and just relax from all the stress that can be effecting each person. In this passage, it talks about nature in general and the good things in it and how people don't appreciate it as much as they should, I can relate to this because it is true. I even admit, at times I can also take nature for granted because i know it'll always be there no matter what, which in fact isn't true. But the way we see nature and especially for myself is a getaway to get some air and to think amongst ourselves in the quiet and in a beauty of natural environment.
I love nature. When I breathe air, smell grass and the sea it makes me calm and relaxed. It makes me feel like nature and I are united as one. Especially in the morning, birds chirps, wind blows gently and the whole atmosphere that surrounds me is really peaceful. The only thing I can see is green and blue. It was as if the whole world evolves around me.On the page 221, it says "The currents of the universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of God". Humans are part of the nature because when we die, our bodies become soil of the ground. Also, nature was created by God which explains the line, "I am part or particle of God".
One of the greatest moments of my life was camping at Bellows beach, away from the bright city lights and under the stars. Although I was with my friends, I felt like I was on a retreat and sometimes we would just sit under the stars and we wouldn't say anything. It was quiet and I had a lot of thinking time. This experience is similar to Emerson's idea of solitude, "To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society...But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars." The quiet moments that my friends and I spent silent under the stars just enjoying the night, helped me reflect and grow as an individual.
When i go to the beach I'm experiencing a feeling close to what Emerson is describing in his essay "Nature". He says in his fourth paragraph, "The sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child." Emerson is saying that adults don't always see nature and its value as much as a child would. The beach to me is the some way. A lot of adults and older people would walk and enjoy the beaches while seeing rubbish and they would pass it by. Children, if they see any rubbish they pick it up. When I'm at the beach i have a soothing feeling when the sun shines on my face and the mist from the crashing waves sprinkles on my face. the beach is always there but not everyone really understands the true beauty of it.
When I go to the beach and no one is there but my family and I, it's relaxing. After watching the sun set and slowly make it's way around the world I feel content. I love the drive home after a long day at the beach especially from north shore because I get to see the bright orangey red sunset and the forest-like scenery. Emerson says, "To speak truly, few adult persons can see nature. Most persons do not see the sun(p220)." This quote relates to my experience because I notice the sun. I think in an adult mind they don't see what I see (a innocent/young mind). They don't realize the beauty of something until someone points it out to them.
I experience similar feelings to Emerson's feelings when I am in a beautiful scenic place or a place I have never been to before that has great scenery. I can relate to the quote "Nature never wears a mean appearance" because I never feel that nature has a mean appearance. I believe that all nature is beautiful, such as the stars at night, mountains, forests, rainbows, the ocean, and many more. I also relate to one of Emerson's points in his essay, that people take the beautiful nature for granted. I agree with this because many people today do take it for granted and are not as appreciate of the beautiful nature we are surrounded by. I can relate to this because I sometimes take nature for granted because I do not always realize and appreciate how beautiful nature is.
I have the same feelings towards nature as Emerson because I love the outdoors. There's something about nature that makes you feel at ease. A couple months ago, I went to Hilo with my halau and took a drive up the mountains. We got out of the car and began to walk, just before the rain poured. My kumu made us find a place to stand, looking wherever we may like, and just stand paying attention to everything around us. All you could hear was the wind blowing the trees, birds chirping, and the rain falling. The scenery was beautiful. "Nature never wears a mean appearance," best describes how I felt. It might not have been as beautiful as watching a sunset, but the feeling you got during and after was peaceful.
I can relate to, "Nature never wears a mean appearance" because anytime I stop to observe and appreciate nature, it never has a mean appearance, it is always beautiful and alluring. I can also kind of relate to Emerson's idea of solitude, "To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society...But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars." This idea reminds me of a night where I sat on my bed, with the window open, and I could feel the cool night air, and i just stared out into the horizon, and gazed at the stars and the faint outline of Diamond Head. It felt like a quiet moment in which I was not distracted by everything and I could just sit back and enjoy this moment and use it to think about life. It was very peaceful and nice, to be able to just sit back and enjoy nature and think.
Every year, I go camping at Bellows for Father's Day; its a tradition. Anyways, I like to explore the nature around me, whether its the trees or the beach. Its nice to get away from the more modern things in life, and take a look and what is natural, and what God has created. I can relate to the what Emerson says, "Nature never wears a mean appearance." This basically means that nature is flawless and it is beautiful. So I indeed agree with what he says about nature.
I experience this when I travel because when I go to different places and see the world, it makes me feel really happy because its so different, and the environment around me is just different to the way here. The trees are beautiful and there are different animals there too. I think its very peaceful going to see different things around the world. When you take a deep breath into the fresh air weather your in the cold or not and you see the different animals in the trees for different seasons, its just beautiful and breathtaking. When you look at nature it makes you see the beauty in the world, and lets you see the peace in the world.
There are not many times that I am able to be alone with nature, nut there was this one time when I was with a friend and we were at the park. We sat on a hill over looking all the busy streets and stores in the town. Although it was over looking the busy town, it was so peaceful and windy that I was able to overlook all of them and see the beautiful clear sky and shimmering ocean. Sitting there gave me time to myself and allowed me to find my happy place. I can completely agree when the author says "Nature never wears a mean appearance," because nature is so beautiful you just cant help yourself from being happy too.
Emerson's description of nature fits how I personally view nature in my life. Nature, to me, is a place where I can let go of my stress, breathe deeply to relax, and be my true self. Emerson states, "all natural objects make a kindred impression, when the mind is open to their influence." Although nature is where I can stop thinking or worrying and just release myself, it is also where I can be motivated and influenced. Every year in the school I attended before, we visited a little camp in the middle of a forest for three days and two nights. There, we got to concentrate on who we are and other important lessons in life through different activities. We always focused on having an open mind so that we can allow he nature to influence us. As a consequence, many people acted and spoke differently after the visit in a good way. People were able to relate to each other much better, and our whole school were able to unify like one family. Emerson shows his opinion about who nature influences the most when he writes, "the sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child." Even though we are al growing up, I believe I am still in the stage where I can be influenced easily by nature. Since everyone was young as a student, we were all able to be influenced easily by the nature at the camp. While I could see a tremendous difference the camp has caused on the students, the teachers' changes were unnoticeable. Even if they could have been influenced spiritually, it was hard to see them compared to the ones of the students.
I experienced a moment somewhat like Emerson, this past summer when me and my family went to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon. I was amazed seeing so many mountains with all different shade of colors and shapes. I felt like God created this beautiful place for us, to enjoy His creation. The author says, "Nature always wears the colors of the spirit", what it means to me is the different colors I seen at the Grand Canyon reflects the mood for everyone.
“To speak truly, few adult persons can see nature. The sun illuminates only the eye of the man, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child” (220). I can relate to this quote because there have been multiple times in my life when I never could understand why my mom or dad did not totally comprehend my way of thinking. They would ask me why I like certain things that I do or why I do certain actions when I do it. In this quote from Emerson’s essay he is saying that the adults in the world do not or cannot see the beauty of nature, but in fact it is the children of the world who fully takes hold of the beauty and admires it. Similarly, my parents (full grown adults) do not or cannot see the beauty of the things I like. An example of this would be a couple days ago when I was looking up videos of Korean singing boy bands on YouTube and my mom walks into my room. She looks at my computer screen behind my back and asks what I was doing, looking up boys dancing and singing on the internet. The main point is that she did not understand the reason why I like listening and watching Korean boy bands. Now I have realized it is because she cannot see the beauty of the music which is produced when they are singing on stage, just like what Emerson was talking about with nature and how only a few adults can see the beauty of nature, but children are the ones who take in the full beauty of it.
I have experienced this quote many times in my life "In the tranquil landscape, and especially in the distant line of the horizon, man beholds somewhat as beautiful as his own nature" (p. 221). When I am alone I feel like the beautiful nature around me is just for my benefit. As I view everything around me I may see nature differently than those around me. Even if it's raining and others are sad because of the depressing feel of the weather I might enjoy the rain and am happy. When things like that happen I feel like the nature is my own nature.
