Wild Meat & the Bully Burgers

How do the characters show love for each other in this book? Is it healthy or unhealthy? Why? How do you show love for others in your life?

42 comments:

  1. When Lovey and her mom were popping blackheads together. It is a healthy love but really awkward way of showing it. One because popping each others black heads is not the typical bonding activity people do to show love. Usually people give hugs and kisses and presents. I show love to people by giving them hugs and telling them I love them.

The teacher in this book shows her love for Lovey & Jerry by always inviting them over to her house, letting them sleepover, braiding Loveys hair, telling them stories, & so forth. This type of love is unhealthy. It's unhealthy because first of all, you shouldn't even be thinking of going over to your TEACHERS house for anything. Especially to sleepover. It's a pedophile movement on the teachers part because she knows what she's doing and she knows that Lovey & Jerry don't know what kind of love she's portraying to them. I try to show love for others in my life by always trying to be there for them. When they're sad, angry, irritated, frustrated, etc. If I didn't love someone, I wouldn't make the effort to be there for them each step of the way through their hardships.

  3. On pages 36-37 I believe the mother shows love towards her daughter. Even though it's a very gross love, it's still love. Lovey squeezes her mothers blackheads and learns about how her mom used to do that to her grandmother, it's almost a tradition. When she's done with that her mother teaches her the word for the week. If her mother didn't care she wouldn't teach her the words or tell her stories about when she was young. She shows her love towards her by teaching her things and talking with her. It's a healthy love but in some way an unhealthy love because of how gross it is. I show love for others in my life by letting them know I appreciate them and being nice to them.

  4. Lovey and Jerry have a love, hate type of relationship. There are many times where they get along with each other, but there are other times when they get mad at each other and fight. Their relationship could also seem like a brother, sister relationship. Sibblings do fight with each other, but they do still love and care for one another. I think it is healthy because fighitng with someone you love will only make the relationship stronger. If throughout all the fighting they still love each other, then they know they have a relationship that can last. I show my love to the ones in my life by just being a happy person. I trust the people in my life and I hope they trust me to. I also like to give hugs(:

  5. Jerry and Lovey show their love for each other by buying matching shirts and wearing them. Also by just hanging out together. I think that this is a healthy type of love. I think it's a healthy love because spending time with your best friends makes the bond of friendship stronger. I show my love for the people in my life by always being there for them. I'm always willing to talk to them about any situation in their life, and they know that. I also show my love for the people in my life by making them laugh. Haha.

  6. One example of the character showing love to another is between Lovey and her father. Her father got hurt on a hunting trip and had his eyes blown out from a volcano. Her father was in bad condition and it was hard for him to see. Lovey showed her loved by taking a trip to Kipu, the place where her father grew up and once lived. At Kipu she gathered a handful of dirt. This dirt was very meaningful to Lovey's father. Lovey loved her father so much that she had the courage to take a trip by herself and bring back what was important to him. I think this is healthy love. From the beginning Lovey and her father had a bond even though at times she was scolded by him. He loved telling her stories and sharing his experiences. One way i show love to others is by helping them even when they don't ask for it. For example washing the dishes or washing clothes without having my mom to do is way to show love and to help her out around the house.

  7. In the novel, Lovey & Jerry show love for each other by just being really good friends. "I'll tell you what love is. Jerry and me in the Kress store. We bought matching T-shirts to wear to school. Says "Keep On Truckin' Mighty Viks." I bought french fries from the fountain, and Jerry bought a large strawberry Icee from the candy store across the street, for the Icee and the Icee points. I made the ketchup sauce with some mustard and pepper. Then we found a booth in the farthest corner 'cause sometimes the waitress forgets to clean the table. We steal the change. Then we mix the french fries left on the plates with the fresh ones we just bought" (102). I think that it's a healthy love because none of them are feeling uncomfortable with each other. They really do love each other as best friends. I show love to my family and family by asking them if they need help with something and doing the smallest things for them. I also talk to them with respect and kindness.

  9. One situation where I think love is shown in Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers, is between Lovey and her P.E. teacher. I think that Lovey loves and respects her teacher. She talks about how her teacher tells her to do stuff, such as clean, and Lovey never complains about it. She does whatever her teacher tells her to do without questioning it or complaining. Another reason I believe Lovey loves her teacher is because she wanted to sleep over her house. I think that if she wasn't close to her teacher she would have never asked to sleep over. I think the relationship between Lovey and her teacher is unhealthy because students and teachers should not be that close. Her teacher shouldn't have asked her to sleep over and Lovey shouldn't have said yes. I think that students and teachers should not have a personal relationship outside of school, especially not a relationship that involves students sleeping over.
I show love for others in my life by giving them the respect they deserve. I am always there for them when they need me and I'm always there to lend a helping hand.

  10. The relationship between Lovey and her mom. I think that relationship is a unhealthy love because her mom makes her do all kinds of things, ie: pick fleas and ticks off the dog, pop her (the Mom's) black heads on her back, pluck the wight hairs on her head for $0.10, that were only for the mom's benefit. Lovey doesn't even call her mom or mommy, she calls her Mother.

I show love to my family different than to my friends. For my parents I cook her dinner when they can't do so them selves because of work or school. I say I love whenever I can, even after a fight because I don't want the last thing I said to them was an insult. For my friends, I listen to them when they have problems for if they just want to talk. I respect their opinion even if it is not my own, we can agree to disagree and move on.
You can show love in many different ways but I think respect is the basic form of love.

  11. I think Lovey and Jerry show love to eachother. On page 7, it says that Jerry buys the best "gift of all" for Lovey. They do everything together, and are best friends. He means a lot to her, and she means a lot to him. I think this relationship of love is healthy because it's showing to be a great friend and valuing their friendship. I show love by being respectful, having manners, and doing good deeds for people here and there. That's a big way of showing love to people in general. In family, you can do the same as well.

  12. The teacher shows her love for Jerry and Lovey by taking care of them after school and lets them have special privileges while in school. The teacher also tells Lovey that she loves her. I think that this love is both healthy because it is right to love a person and to let that person know that they are loved. I also believe that it is unhealthy because the teachers also makes them feel special and in return they have to do dirty work. I show love for others by doing favors for them, and being there for support when they need someone. I also show love to others by telling them that I love them and showing them kindness.

  13. In this book there was a scene that Lovey and Cal grew fond of their pet cow that they were taking care of. when Their father brought home a cow, Lovey and Cal decided to name that cow Bully. But their father told them not to name the cow because they were going to eat him anyway. As the uncles were taking away the cow Lovey and Cal could not say good bye because they loved Bully and they wanted him to stay with them. When they were eating burgers one night they did not want to eat the burgers because they were Bully Burgers. I think this love is a bit healthy because Lovey and Cal learn to love animals even though there is so much killings of animals in this book. I think this is healthy love because they learn how live actually works and they begin to grow up. I show love to others by helping them out when they need it. When i am busy doing something and then someone i love comes to me for help i would stop what i am doing to help them so that they would not be troubled with problems. Another thing i do to show my love is that I make sure they feel loved especially on special days like their Birthdays.

  15. The relationship that Lovey and Jerry share is a healthy type of love. Although they don't always get along and have arguments time to time, they don't let that get between their friendship. When either of them feels lonely, they have each other to count on. The way I show someone my love is by making an effort to be in their lives. If they need help with anything, even if it's something small, I try my best to help. You can tell that I love someone just by the relationship I share with that person.

  16. Kealakekua Makekau: In the chapter, Calhoon Never Lies (82), it expresses Calhoon's tough love for Lovey. Calhoon, Lovey and their father go hunting for wild turkeys. Lovey and Calhoon find a wild turkey without their father noticing. Lovey feels brave enough to kill the wild turkey and Calhoon disagrees with her motives. Calhoon then tells Lovey, "First you like be like Daddy. And then you like be haole. And then you like be like Jerry. And Katy. And now you like be one rough and tough hunter like Daddy. Why you no can just be you, hah? Why you like be something you ain't?" This shows that Calhoon really loves Lovey. She yells at her because she cares for Lovey's personality or reputation.

  17. Jerry and Lovey for each other in many ways as friends. They do just about everything together and everyone knows that. They sit together and eat lunch with each other, discuss what colors they want their furniture to be in their future homes, want kind of person they want to marry, and much more. In the very beginning of the book in class she says how they sit by each other all the time. They also go to sleepovers at a teachers house and when the were at her house and got scared, they both went to each other for comfort because they're are best friends. Jerry and Lovey love each other but in a friend way, nothing more than that

  18. In the story, the teacher shows her love for Lovey and Jerry by favoring them in class, inviting them over to her house, and sharing stories. This is not a common or even a moral act of love because it is wrong to be taking advantage of young kids like the teacher does to Lovey and Jerry. The teachers love for the kids is unhealthy because no student should sleepover their teachers house because it may end up being a pedophile act like in the story. To show your love for a student or a teacher is to be respectful and kind in any situation. I show love to people around me by making efforts to listen and let people them know that I am trustworthy and will always care.

  20. An example of characters showing love for each other in this book is when Lovey goes all the way to Kauai by herself one day while her father is still in the hospital. Lovey goes to Kauai to get dirt from Kipu, where her father used to live. She gets the dirt so that when her father dies, she'll put the dirt she got from Kipu mixed in with dirt from their backyard and put it under her father's bed so he'll be home. This is love because she spends a lot of money to get the plane tickets and pay the taxi driver, risks her life, and risks getting in a lot of trouble from her parents just so she could get a bag of dirt for her father. This is a healthy love because it shows that Lovey really cares for her father and really loves him. I show love for others by saying I love them and helping them through anything and always being there for them.

  21. Characters in this book have different ways of showing love. For example, Jerry and Crystal love each other but their love method of having sex ends up Crystal committing suicide. This love method shows loss of innocence. Also, Lovey's dad cares about Lovey but seems very dull and stolid because he doesn't know how to show his affection. He is upset when Lovey burns the cassette and causes trouble but later he covers her body with goat blanket when Lovey falls asleep. However, there would be other ways to punish Lovey instead of swearing and hitting her. It's violent and abusive. Jerry and Lovey love each other as friends and they share their stories and play with barbies that show their innocence as little kids.
I think this book contains more unhealthy ways of love as I explained above.
I show my love by understanding and not hurting other's feelings.

  22. I forgot to mention:
I thought that it was healthy for Calhoon to tell Lovey that because Lovey needs to know the truth that way she can change for the better. For me, I express love by doing chores around the house and doing good in school for my parents. I help my little syblings with their homework. I give my grandparents a massage or try to make them laugh. Expressing love to my family is very important to me because they love me so much.

  24. One example of how the characters in the book show their love for each other is, in the chapter dealing with the Lovey and Jerry, and their close relationship with their teacher. Lovey and Jerry love their teacher, and I think that the teacher loves them back, Lovey and Jerry go to the teacher's house frequently throughout the chapter, and the situation starts off okay, but as time progresses the love relationship turns unhealthy. The teacher, at first her love for the children is caring and it is healthy, but as time progresses and the children spend more time with her, the love turns into unhealthy and she starts to come off as creepy and tries to impart her beliefs on the children. This is unhealthy because the teacher pretty much comes off as a pedophile in the end, and really a student shouldn't be frequently visiting and sleeping over at a teacher's house. The way that I show my love for my family is, being respectful, and doing good deeds occasionally, by doing chores or helping out with things around the house.

  25. Crystal Kawasaki shows love towards Lovey by rescuing her and Jerry whenever Larry is abusing or harassing them. Another example is when Lovey and Jerry are at the Hilo County fair. Jerry was not able to win any stuffed animals which caused both to be teased by their classmates. They were feeling disappointed until Crystal let them borrow her stuffed animals to hold. The relationship between Crystal and Lovey displays healthy love. To Lovey, Crystal is her role model and is perfect. In return Crystal treats Lovey with care and compassion. I show love to others in my life by being present when they are in need and supporting them. I will also listen and support them.

  26. The characters show love for each other when they were driving around and Lovey is looking for cows while her parents and Calhoon have there own little thing going on. Her mom sings to Calhoon and the dad corrects the mom if shes wrong with the lyrics. This part of the book i say its healthy for her parents and Calhoon but its unhealthy for Lovey because she doesnt really connect with them. Lovey and her dad has some what a connection when she was searching for cows and her dad would give her five cents for every cow she finds. The way i show love for others in my life is to take care of one another, show respect, and to support the things they do.

  28. One example of the characters showing each other love is when the teacher invites Lovey and Jerry over to her house. When she braids Lovey's hair, kisses her goodbye, and how she gets special attention from her in school. I think this is an unhealthy relationship because the teacher crossed the line between students and teachers. Towards the beginning the teacher comes off as a nice person who really cares for Lovey and Jerry. Even though it got weird when she would invite her over it still showed that the teacher had a soft spot for Lovey and Jerry. When the teacher told Lovey to kiss her on the lips it made everything so much more obvious. Towards the end you can see the relationship is being unhealthy and the teacher being a pedophile. I show my love to others by listening to them when they need it, giving advice, spending time with them, helping them, making food and making them laugh.

  29. Lovey's mom shows love to Lovey by being very demanding. She doesn't show that she cares for Lovey that much and frequently yells at Lovey. Her mother also gets to the point where she gives her slaps a couple of times. Lovey just wants to know how it feels like to be loved and to have people care and be genuine to her and that is why she seeks so hard to find the love from her mother because she's not getting it. The type of love that her mother shows in the book is not healthy. It isn't healthy because she is pushing Lovey away more than drawing her forward. The mother is using words and calling Lovey things that makes their relationship even more distant.
I show love for other people by showing that I care about them when I see that they are down or hurt. I show people love and care by giving them hugs and just being their support system when they need someone there for them the most.

  30. Lovey's father shows love for her by killing the goats that were suffering. Lovey shows compassion to creatures and her father knew about her feelings and respected it. When the goats decided to jump into the lava, her father shot them to help end their lives quicker and with less pain. I believe this is a healthy relationship because he couldn't help get them out of the lava but when he saw them suffering he knew Lovey would be sad and tried to shot the goats so it would be less painful. I try to show that i love my mom by telling her about my day at school because being at this school i can barely see my mom so she gets agitated and worried about me. I want to feel like she is still a part of my life and everything is okay even when she is not there.

  31. Lovey's grandmother shows love to Lovey by taking care of her when her parents sent her to Moloka'i. Her grandmother helped her realize that what the teacher was saying about the 44,000 people will meet God was wrong and helped her turn away from those thoughts. The grandmother took Lovey in at this too, showing that she loves Lovey. If she didnt show that she loved Lovey she wouldn't have let Lovey into her home and help her forget about the 44,000 incident. Lovey's grandmother shows Lovey love. This is healthy because it shows the relationship that Lovey and her grandma share. Its also healthy because she is getting to know her grandmother more. I show my love for others by doing nice things for them, helping them when they are in need, caring for them, watching over them, being there support system, taking care of them when they aren't capable of taking care of themselves, and overall just being there for them where its needed and when its not.

  32. Lovey shows love by popping black heads off of her mother's back. It is healthy because it is not harmful to her and because it is mother-daughter bonding time even though it is a little weird. I think that I show love by listening to others. By me listening to others, it shows them that they have someone who cares about what they have/need to say. With listening, I also try to help others with any problems they may have.

  33. Lovey has a crush on Jenks, because out of all the older kids in this novel, Jenks is one of the two that shows love toward Lovey. Around Larry and his other friends Jenks is rude to Lovey and Jerry, but Jenks admits that he likes to spend time with Lovey and Jerry ("I can be myself around you guys"). Although he's not himself with Larry, Jenks still sticks up for Lovey and Jerry when Larry gets upset with them. On the weekends, Jenks and Lovey work at a gift shop by the hotels, there they sing songs for the tourists and make leis together.
This love is, for the most part, healthy. Both Lovey and Jenks get postive values out of this relationship. For Jenks he has someone who he doesn't have to act differently around and for Lovey, she has a friend.
I show love to others by listening and supporting them. When I listen I don't tell others because it isn't loving.

  34. Lovey shows love to her father, by going hunting with him. The father shows love by telling her some stories of his past, so they can have a father daughter bond. I would say its sort of healthy but the father daughter relationship can be improved. I show love to others, by being caring and nice to one another.

  35. The characters in the book show love towards each other. Usually the love is unhealthy. I feel that I can give more examples on the unhealthy love and affection towards the characters more than healthy love shown between the characters. THe unhealthy love that is shown in the book is between the teacher, Jerry, and Lovey. At first you think it's cute and good that the teacher shows favoritism and special treatment for Lovey since barely any of her family members do, but after a while you tend to get that sketchy feeling that the teacher is actually psycho and is in love with the children. That is definitely unhealthy love. But the most obvious revealed example of healthy love would be between Lovey and Jerry. It's not that they're in love with each other, as boyfriend and girlfriend. It is a friendship and family love. They're best friends and care about each other. I show love towards others through my actions. I show my friends I love them by listening to them when they need someone to talk to and giving them advice and help. I show love towards my family by helping them around the house, hugging, and other gestures. Even cleaning and cooking rice is a way of me showing love.

  36. In the story, the teacher shows her love to Lovey and Jerry by giving them special treatment and inviting them to her house. Lovey returns the love by going with everything she says because she her self needed and was so desperate to be loved. This wasn't a very healthy way to show their love because, it seemed inappropriate. The way they kiss each other on the lips and letting the teacher fix Lovey's hair, seemed as if she was a pedophile. It was also inappropriate because she was only Lovey teacher, no relation what so ever. The way I show my love is by showing them my appreciation every now and then, such as listening to them and not talking back and helping them with errands. Even sometimes when I don't follow their rules, it doesn't mean that I don't love them. I also show my love by being nice to them, despite our differences. Another way I would show my love is to stand up for what I believe in.

  38. In the book Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers, Lovey and her mom have sort of a distant and unhealthy relationship. Even though they do love each other, they have strange ways of showing it. For example, when Lovey and her mom were popping blackheads together. That is not a normal activity that most people do together, but I guess for them, that's all they can think of. You can see that even though they are doing it together, they still seem distant, but you know that they love each other because they are at least trying.

  39. One example of showing love is when Jerry and Lovey got invited to the teachers house because the teacher treated them better than the other students and braided Lovey's hair like it was her own child. The teacher's relationship with Lovey is very unhealthy because she ends up telling Lovey that her parents don't love her as much as she loves Lovey so they won't make it up to heaven to see God. Its also unhealthy because a teacher shouldn't be inviting them to her house and braiding her hair and also giving them special treatment.

  40. The main character, Lovey, definitely expresses her love throughout the book. Jerry was her closest friend, who Lovey loved and cared about. Lovey was always with him, and she received punishments with him. Without love, Lovey would not stay with Jerry when his brother, Larry, is punishing them for something. In return, Jerry shows love to Lovey. He also stays with her and understands the true Lovey more than anyone else. Love being shown between Jerry and Lovey are both healthy, because it is as friends. Lovey shows her love in the same way to other characters. Still, it depends on the other character if the love is healthy or not.
Similarly, I show my love by caring about and being with the person. I believe that people can really feel that you love them if you truly care about them. If someone cares for a person, he or she will naturally be able to do what he or she would like. Also, just being with the person you love will give them comfort. It is important to be beside them especially when they are having a hard time. I believe forcing and overpowering people you love is selfish and unhealthy.

  41. Lovey shows her love for Jerry as a friend when they went to Reed's Island on Halloween. Jerry decided beforehand that both he and Lovey would go trick-or-treating at Reed's Island, across the Wailuku River, this year. They go house to house saying "trick-or-treat" and in return they would receive candy or a bar of chocolate. At the last house that they went to, Jerry and Lovey grabbed a bunch of dimes from a fishbowl, so much that they filled both their hands full of dimes. When they grabbed all that they could carry, Jerry runs "like a crazy person" away from the house. He trips and the pillowcase with all the candy and even the money in his hands went every where. Jerry's mother took Jerry into the car and Lovey was left at the scene contemplateing what to do. If it was not for Lovey's mom forcing Lovey into the car, she would pick up all the dimes for Jerry, even with all the popular people watching. Being a kind friend like Lovey shows her love towards her best friend Jerry. This is a healthy way to show her love because she was not hurting any one and she showed that she cared for Jerry and his feelings. I show my love for others by helping them in situations that might be hard to handle or is difficult to face by her or his self. Also I show my love for my friends by comforting them when they feel like they have no one to talk to and need someone to tell their secrets to.

  42. Throughout the entire novel there were good and bad moments with Lovey and her sister Cal. In one of the chapters Cal is fed up with Lovey trying to be anybody else but her. She just wants Lovey to be herself and is trying to get Lovey to realize that there is nothing wrong with that. Cal likes Lovey the way she is and wants Lovey to understand that. The situation could have been handled more gently but for being a child it is a moderately healthy show her love for her sister. In my life to show love to those that are important I try to support the decisions they make and help in anyway to get to a place that is good for them and makes them happy.
